Getting to Stuttgart from the United States

There are no direct transatlantic flights into Stuttgart Airport (STR) — it is a short- and medium-haul airport. From the United States you connect through a major European hub and take a short feeder flight into Stuttgart, or, from Frankfurt, a fast ICE train. This guide lays out the cleanest options and how the final leg to your door works.

Whichever way you arrive, the ground transfer in the Stuttgart region is the part we make predictable: a fixed price locked at booking, an English-speaking directly-employed driver waiting at the STR Arrivals Meeting Point, and no meter, airport surcharge or night tariff — so the last leg of a long journey is the simplest one.

Why there is no direct US–Stuttgart flight

Stuttgart Airport focuses on European and holiday routes; long-haul transatlantic service is concentrated at the big German gateways. In practice that means every itinerary from the US is a one-stop (or two-stop) trip: a transatlantic leg into a hub, then a 50–70 minute feeder flight into STR.

This is normal and usually painless — the hubs below all run frequent same-day connections to Stuttgart, and several are also reachable from Stuttgart by train if you prefer to land once and ride in.

The best hubs to connect through

Frankfurt (FRA) is the most frequent connection and the closest hub — multiple daily feeder flights to STR, and a direct ICE train option (see below). Munich (MUC) is the next-densest Lufthansa hub with frequent STR hops. Amsterdam (AMS) on KLM/Delta and Zurich (ZRH) are strong alternatives, and London Heathrow (LHR) works well if you are already routing through the UK.

For award travel and oneworld/SkyTeam itineraries, AMS, ZRH and LHR widen your options beyond the Lufthansa group. Choose the hub with the shortest comfortable connection — a 90-minute-plus layover is wise for the bag transfer and any passport control.

Frankfurt option: fly the last leg or take the train

If you land at Frankfurt, you have a choice. The feeder flight to STR is about 50 minutes gate-to-gate. Alternatively, the ICE high-speed train runs from Frankfurt to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof in roughly 1h15 — attractive if you would rather not re-clear security for a short hop, especially with the new high-speed line.

If you take the train into Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof rather than flying into STR, we still cover the onward leg to your final address at a fixed price — just enter the station as your pickup point.

Arriving at STR and reaching your destination

On the feeder flight into Stuttgart you arrive at Terminal 1; collect your bags on the Arrivals level and your pre-booked driver meets you at the Meeting Point with a name board. Stuttgart city centre is about 16 km (20–30 minutes); the automotive corridor around Sindelfingen and Böblingen 18–20 km; Tübingen and Reutlingen 35–38 km.

Because the transfer price is fixed at booking, a delayed connection does not change what you pay — the driver tracks your STR landing time and waits at no extra charge. For business arrivals the Premium S-Class includes a VAT-compliant invoice; for families the Van seats up to 8 with luggage.

Frequently asked questions

Are there direct flights from the US to Stuttgart?

No. Stuttgart Airport (STR) has no direct transatlantic service. From the US you connect through a European hub — most often Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Zurich or London — and take a short feeder flight into Stuttgart, or the ICE train from Frankfurt.

What is the best way to get to Stuttgart from the US?

Fly transatlantic into Frankfurt or Munich (the densest connections), then either take a ~50-minute feeder flight to STR or, from Frankfurt, the ICE train to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof in about 1h15. Amsterdam, Zurich and London Heathrow are strong alternative hubs.

Should I fly into Frankfurt and take the train instead of flying to STR?

It is a good option. The Frankfurt–Stuttgart ICE takes roughly 1h15 and avoids re-clearing security for a short hop. We cover the onward leg from Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof to your final address at a fixed price.

How do I get from Stuttgart Airport to my final destination?

A pre-booked fixed-price transfer meets you at the STR Arrivals Meeting Point and drives you door-to-door — about 20–30 minutes to the city centre. The price is locked at booking with no meter, surcharge or night tariff, and the driver waits free if your connection lands late.

Can I get a VAT invoice for a US business trip to the Stuttgart region?

Yes. Select the Premium class and add company details at booking for a German VAT-compliant invoice. It is the common choice for visits to Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Bosch and the supplier network around Sindelfingen and Böblingen.
